What is Life?

Life is a game played on an infinite squared board, or in this case a 15x15 grid which approximates infinity by being cyclical (i.e. opposing edges are deemed to be in contact).
Blue cells are alive, black cells are dead.
The rules are simple:
  1. BIRTH, a dead cell comes to life if it has exactly 3 living neigbours.
  2. DEATH by overcrowding, a live cell will die if it has more than 3 neighbours.
  3. DEATH by exposure,a live cell will die if it has less than 2 neighbours.
To begin with the live cells are distributed randomly, some configurations will just die away, while some will become stable. To repopulate the grid with random live cells all you have to do is click the 'RANDOM' button.

To try your own configurations click 'CLEAR' and then click the squares of the grid to create living cells. Then click 'RESUME' to see if your creature survives.

You'll find that resizing your browser will be a bit slow while things are going, so hit 'FREEZE' to stop the action while you get things how you want.
